America is a nation of immigrants. The roads built by immigrants years ago are traveled by descendents of immigrants today. Likewise, the paths being built by immigrants today will be trekked by future generations. To continue on our course towards an even greater nation, we must ensure that the journey never ends.

Immigrants come to America seeking freedom and opportunity. Immigrants create jobs and pay taxes. Immigrants defend our streets and our nation. Immigrants build homes and build lives. Immigrants contribute immeasurably through hard work, bright hopes and an eye to the future.

Despite our tradition of welcoming immigrants to our shores, there is a dark side to America’s immigrant journey. Even today, fear infuses the lives of many in America. Some still want to shut the door.

Recent laws have sent refugees back to their persecutors, stripped basic rights from children and the elderly, and separated families.
